My Favorite Pornstar: Tell us bit about Captain Jack and how did you get the name?
Captain Jack: I was born and raised in Wisconsin. I still live here. I graduated from college with a degree in business. I’ve been in marketing and sales most of my adult life. To paraphrase Bo Jackson, porn is just a hobby. I’m a huge sports fan, especially baseball and football. I was joking with someone the other day that you can divide my adult life in 2 phases. Before 2010, all my vacations revolved around sports. I have traveled to 44 major league stadiums (obviously, some are now closed) and went on various trips revolving around sports before that and practically every vacation after that has revolved around porn, going to conventions, meeting friends in California, etc. Captain Jack came to be when Steph from ADT (adultdvdtalk.com) told me I needed a user name. I was drinking a Captain and coke at the time and was about to make myself a Jack and coke. Voila’! Captain Jack was born!
My Favorite Pornstar: How did you get into reviewing adult movies? which did you do first interview pornstars or review adult movies?
Captain Jack: I started out by doing the reviews. I was on the ADT forum and I saw a post saying “Reviewers wanted”. I thought about it for half a second. I’ve always liked porn and I wanted to be a writer when I was younger, so it sounded perfect! I submitted a review and off I went!
My Favorite Pornstar: How did you get into interviewing Pornstars?
Captain Jack: I started doing the reviews back in September of 2008. ADT used to have a screener system that different studios would send their disks to and we could pick and choose what we wanted to review. After a while, I started soliciting different studios and received disks directly from them. Well, one day in 2013, I was conversing with Francesca Le about getting LeWood disks sent to me. She set me up with her PR company. A few weeks later, they sent me a letter and pictures saying they now represent Tasha Reign and if I wanted to interview her, they’d make her available. I never thought about that before. I asked Steph and she said go for it. But I only wanted to do it if I could ask unique questions and really get to know the person. So I took a couple weeks and thought up some questions and went for it. Sure, some of my questions are the usual porn star stuff but I’ve been told by various people in the industry that I do a pretty complete interview of the girl. After interviewing Tasha, I decided to keep going for it. I’m now well over 600 interviews.
My Favorite Pornstar: What makes a good adult movie?
Captain Jack: Chemistry. The performers have to be into each other and into the sex. It’s a very underrated aspect. And passion! Also, the performers have to love sex. Believe it or not, some girls don’t.
My Favorite Pornstar: Do you have any favorite production companies, directors or pornstars?
Captain Jack: Oh, so many. I don’t want to leave anyone out but Evil Angel, HardX, Elegant Angel and the Lansky sites (Blacked, Tushy and Vixen) are all outstanding. For girl/girl, I like Girlsway and Girlfriend Films. Pure Taboo is fantastic for the storylines and the acting. And the sex is pretty good too! Directors, you can probably guess from the above list. I love Mason and Greg Lansky, thsoe are the top 2 directors in the industry right now, IMO. Mark Wood and Francesca Le’ are fantastic along with Toni Ribas and Mick Blue and Maestro Claudio, they are all with Evil. They just signed Chris Streams as a director who is a favorite of mine. He won the inaugural director of the year award in the Captain Jack Off Awards. I miss Tim Von Swine, he produced some great content. Pat Myne is great. Bree Mills and her directors (Stills by Alan and Craven Morehead) are very good.
My Favorite Pornstar: Recently you reviewed your 5,000th adult movie, do you watch porn other than to review it?
Captain Jack: I’ve been a porn fan for over 20 years before reviewing my first title, so yes. Now, if I get a title in my hands, I will review it first as a professional, fully clothed with my critic’s hat on. But, after that, if there’s something I really like, I will use porn as God fully intended it to be used!
My Favorite Pornstar: Have you ever reviewed an adult movie & personally passed on feedback to the pornstars involved?
Captain Jack: Definitely. But only if I know the girl. If we’ve never talked, she might just consider me a perv. (Well, I am but this wouldn’t be in a good way). I can remember one example of a gangbang. I gave it a decent review because it was good but I texted the girl and said, “Hey, did so-and-so kind of check out? After the beginning, I didn’t see him until the pops. Or was he edited out?” I didn’t put that in the review because I wasn’t sure. I might have missed something. But my first inclination was correct. The guy had wood problems and the 5-guy gangbang became a 4-guy gangbang.
My Favorite Pornstar: Which is your favorite adult movie & why?
Captain Jack: Geez. So many good ones. Mason has directed some great showcases. The Asa Akira trilogy and the Tori Black and Anikka Albrite duologies were masterpieces. First, you had a star that was beautiful and a great performer. Then you add in top male talent and some firsts (first anal, first DP, etc) and it all adds up to a winner. Plus, Mason always brings out the best in her performers. She is exceptional. A couple current series that are pretty fantastic are Mason’s DP Me for HardX and Toni Ribas’ All Stuffed Up for Evil Angel.
My Favorite Pornstar: What advice would you give any aspiring pornstars?
Captain Jack: The usual advice. Before you join this industry, before you film your first scene, think everything through and make sure it’s for you. Be aware that you film one scene and your whole town will know about it. Your family will find out. It will stay with you. I’ve interviewed many a girl who was all gung ho for the industry and she was out before the interview was 2 weeks old.
My Favorite Pornstar: Have you ever interviewed a really difficult pornstar, how did the interview end up?
Captain Jack: That has happened more than once. Sometimes a girl will give a yes or no answer or just a one sentence response. I can’t get anything out of her. I know it’s not going to read well. Surprisingly to me, a few of those have been really popular! I had a couple girls who were offended that I actually asked about sex. You can tell when a girl doesn’t really want to do it. I press on because I might never talk to her again. I did an interview with one veteran that was upset I asked about anal. She answered the question but then complained to her publicist about it. The PR person actually apologized about the girl. There was a retired performer from Germany who posted on the ADT forums occasionally.. I sent her a Private Message about an interview. She said she would do it but she didn’t want me to ask any questions about sex. I told her this is a porn interview and people don’t care about your viewpoint about tensions in the Middle East. I passed on that one. On the other side, I’ve had girls apologize for talking too much. No, that’s great!! It’s an interview!! For the most part, all of the girls I’ve interviewed have been great. There’s only a handful that weren’t fun.
My Favorite Pornstar: There seems to be ‘bullying’ within the adult entertainment industry have you ever been dragged into this?
Captain Jack: That’s easy. Farrah Superstar: Backdoor Teen Mom. It was the Farrah Abraham sequel to her first movie. It was a piece of crap. Just a blatant ripoff. Vivid only released it to make a quick buck. It was grainy footage which was in the first one and the anal lasted only about a minute. I gave it a half star. I didn’t want to give it zero stars because people might think I just forgot.
My Favorite Pornstar: There are so many adult movies out there, how does a director create something that stands out these days?
Captain Jack: It’s difficult to set yourself apart nowadays but I’ll expand on a studio I mentioned above. Pure Taboo is like no other studio out there. It is a showcase for girls to show their acting chops. They create stories that are uncomfortable yet you can’t turn away. And the sex is great. Sometimes, Bree will have girls write the scripts themselves. I’ve had so many girls tell me they want to work for them.
My Favorite Pornstar: Over the years how have you seen adult movie production/directing change?
Captain Jack: Obviously, gonzo is more prevalent than it was 20, 30 years ago. There are more girls in the industry than ever before but a lot of them don’t last long. The money isn’t as good as it was 10 years ago thanks to the tube sites and everyone stealing porn. I know of a girl who was out of the industry for 5 years and announced she was coming back. But as soon as she found out the rates had dropped greatly, she aborted the comeback.
My Favorite Pornstar: Have you reviewed any pornstars negatively for them to go on & become really successful
Captain Jack: Not that I can think of off-hand. You can tell when a girl is into it and has an energy level that is incredible. I will pat myself on the back and say the first time I saw Holly Hendrix, I knew she was going to be a star. I’ll tell you of a girl who I didn’t review negatively, I didn’t review her at all because I wasn’t into all her tattoos. I’ve told Bonnie Rotten this so I don’t mind repeating it, I just wasn’t into her. I thought the tats were a bit much. But I heard this great buzz on her so I finally relented and checked her out. Damn, she was outstanding! She won Female Performer of the Year at the first AVN I ever attended and I texted her a congratulations. Now, tattoos aren’t a turn off. They’re not a turn-on either, they’re just there. I guess a well placed tattoo can be sexy but I don’t even think of them. Most girls have tats now.
My Favorite Pornstar: When you’ve seen one adult movie have you seen them all, does reviewing adult movies get boring after many years?
Captain Jack: It’s been 10 years and I have no desire to quit. Of course, there are some movies I will put in for a couple of minutes and decide I don’t want to sit through 2 hours of that crap. You wade through a lot of average content but then you come upon a disk that blows you away. Or you discover a new girl that you’ve never seen before. Some readers commented to a reviewer once about why he only gives good reviews. Well, we only review content that we want to review. If there’s a studio out there that I know puts out inferior quality, why would I want to watch it?
My Favorite Pornstar: When you review an adult movie what specifically are you looking for?
Captain Jack: Hot sex is the main factor. As I said above, great chemistry and passion is also key. I’ve seen so much porn, that I’m a little jaded. I like the really hardcore content, that’s my favorite. However, I had an epiphany at one of the conventions a couple of years ago. A girl was selling various disks at her table and I saw a fan buy what I considered to be her worst title. I realized that not everyone has the same taste as me. When I review something, I try to keep an open mind. If it’s a romantic couples release, I’ll try and be objective and look for something that a fan of that genre might enjoy.
My Favorite Pornstar: What’s the strangest adult movie that you’ve reviewed?
Captain Jack: I can’t think of anything off-hand. As I said above, if there’s something I don’t like, I’ll stop reviewing it right there. I was reviewing a title set in a psychiatric ward the other day. 10 minutes into it, I didn’t know what the hell was going on. I started over and paid attention to every detail and it was just weird and I didn’t get it. So I stopped and started reviewing something else.
My Favorite Pornstar: Talk us through the process when you interview a pornstar?
Captain Jack: Well, I have a standard set of questions. But, unless she’s totally new, I will do some research on her. I’ll ask her a question about one of her titles, or I’ll ask her a question that I saw in another interview only try and get more out of her. Lots of times, I will watch a BTS feature and if a girl says something provocative, I’ll mark it down so if I ever interview her, I can ask about it. For example, I recently had the chance to interview Lisa Ann. On my BTS notes, she said something about 5-6 years ago that she had a friend who is 100 years old and she writes to once a week. I thought that was interesting and showed a side of her that the public doesn’t see. So when I talked to her, that was one of my questions. She was very happy I brought it up. When I do a second or third interview, or a sixth, like with Romi, it gets tougher. I try and come up with some different questions, sometimes I’ll post in the ADT forum to come up with questions. Romi tweeted to her fans to see if they had any good questions. By good, I mean unique and interesting.
My Favorite Pornstar: Anything that you’d like to get of your chest related to the adult entertainment industry?
Captain Jack: I wish more people would pay for their porn. By going on these tube sites, they’re taking the industry down. People complain about their favorite stars not getting work, well, it’s because you’re stealing porn. You steal porn, the producers and directors make less money. Less money means less money for the girls and the girls don’t work. SImple as that. Also, I want to say that most girls in this industry are really super nice people. (The guys too, don’t want to leave them out!) They work hard for our entertainment pleasure. Most people don’t know how hard these girls work. You might only see a scene that last 30 minutes but she was on set for 6 hours that day. Then she goes home and has to look at all her social media (Twitter, Instagram, OnlyFans, Snapchat, etc) and that sometimes takes hours. Social media is almost a 24/7 gig. Then she’ll film content for one of her personal sites, answer emails, do some webcamming….it’s exhausting! Not to mention, their bodies are important to their work so they have to workout and go to the gym. Most normal people will go to their 9-5 job and come home and unwind. These girls are going at it 12-16 hours/day and don’t get a day off!
